Starting a travel nursing contract in Portland? Here's what you need to know about neighborhoods, commute times, parking, and making the most of your time in one of the Pacific Northwest's most vibrant cities.
Welcome to Portland, Oregon
Portland has a well-earned reputation as one of the most livable cities in the Pacific Northwest — and for travel nurses arriving on contract, it offers a unique combination of world-class medical facilities, diverse neighborhoods, and an outdoor lifestyle that's hard to beat.
Here's what you need to know before your contract starts.
Key Hospital Systems and Their Neighborhoods
OHSU (Oregon Health & Science University) sits on Marquam Hill in Southwest Portland. If you're contracting here, properties in SW Portland, Lake Oswego, or Beaverton offer the best commute.
Providence Portland Medical Center is in NE Portland. Properties in North or NE Portland put you within 10–15 minutes.
Legacy Emanuel Medical Center is in North Portland — one of the city's busiest trauma centers.
Adventist Health Portland is in SE Portland, near the Montavilla neighborhood.
Getting Around
Portland has an excellent public transit system (TriMet) including light rail (MAX), buses, and the Portland Streetcar. Many of our properties are within walking distance of MAX stops, making car-free commuting very realistic.
That said, most travel nurses prefer having a car for weekend trips to the coast, Mt. Hood, or the Columbia River Gorge.
Parking tip: Our properties include dedicated parking — a significant advantage over downtown apartments where parking can cost $150–$300/month extra.
